Related Inaugural Events
In honor of the presidential inauguration, all Columbians—including students, faculty, staff, and alumni—were invited to join President Minouche Shafik and our neighbors and friends for a series of free events and programs across our campuses and Upper Manhattan in the weeks surrounding the day.
Events included opportunities to learn, volunteer, and connect as a community.
Columbia University President Minouche Shafik will join Barnard President Laura Rosenbury, Teachers College President Tom Bailey, and local leaders to kick off the Great Broadway Sweep, a Climate Week partnership between the NYC Sanitation Foundation and We Love NYC to collect litter along the entire length of Broadway.
New York City Councilmember Shaun Abreu and Presidents Shafik, Rosenbury, and Bailey will lead a rally for community partners, neighbors, and volunteers at the University’s Manhattanville Campus to initiate the Morningside Heights and West Harlem portion of the effort to clean up Broadway, the "World's Most Famous Street."

Morningside Lights returns with The Open Book, a celebration of the free exchange of ideas and an homage to the libraries that preserve access to knowledge and affirm our freedom to read. Presented in partnership with the Columbia University Libraries and The New York Public Library, each of the 50+ community-built lanterns will pay tribute to a book that inspires, enlightens, and shapes how we see the world.
Join us after dusk on September 30 to witness a luminous catalogue of “Great Books” where each glowing volume will honor a unique perspective, while renewing our collective resolve to keep our libraries free and our minds open.

Visit the Rare Book and Manuscript Library, located in Butler Library, and see the exhibition "Charter and Keys: Inauguration Ceremonies at Columbia," a retrospective in honor of the Presidential Inauguration. Learn about the traditions, secrets, and inside stories behind the investiture ceremony and how it has evolved over the years.

Calling all Columbia Lions and NYU Violets – faculty, administrators, and staff! Increase your physical activity and well-being this fall by stepping up and joining this fun challenge. For three weeks, each university will join together as one team to see whether the uptown or downtown NYC university will achieve the highest average step count by the challenge’s end. Individuals will also compete for prizes, bragging rights, and more.
Challenge features a special walk with President Minouche Shafik and Interim Provost Dennis Mitchell. Details will be provided to active participants during the Challenge. Stay tuned!
