To deescalate the rancor and give us all a chance to consider next steps, I am announcing that all classes will be held virtually on Monday. During the coming days, a working group of Deans, university administrators and faculty members will try to bring this crisis to a resolution.

Antisemitism and calls for genocide have no place at a university. My priority has been the safety and security of our community, but that leaves plenty of room for robust disagreement and debate.

Christian S. Stohler, Dean of the College of Dental Medicine since August 2013, will be stepping down from his role as Dean and Senior Vice President of Columbia University Irving Medical Center, effective December 31, 2023.

I write to share that Jerome Davis, Secretary of the University, has informed me of his plans to retire at the end of this academic year. 

Gillian Lester, who has served as Dean of Columbia Law School since 2015, will step down at the end of the 2023-2024 academic year to return to full-time teaching and scholarship as a member of the Faculty of Law.
