I write to share that G. Michael Purdy will be retiring from his position as the University’s Executive Vice President for Research on December 31, 2019.

The first initiative begins with the creation of a task force to consider what more the University should be doing with respect to climate change. A related and very significant second initiative also involves a task force and will focus on how to extend Columbia’s abilities to bring the extraordinary knowledge and capacities of the University in tandem with the wider academic community and actors beyond the campus to more effectively address pressing human problems.

I am very pleased to announce that I have appointed Professor Amy Hungerford, a scholar of twentieth and twenty-first century American literature, as the next Executive Vice President for Arts and Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, effective January 1, 2020.  

I write to share the news that Lee Goldman, MD, MPH, Harold and Margaret Hatch Professor, Executive Vice President and Dean of the Faculties of Health Sciences and Medicine, and Chief Executive of Columbia University Irving Medical Center, will be stepping down from his senior executive positions on June 30, 2020. 

I am delighted to announce that the Obama Foundation has selected the Columbia University Center for Oral History Research to produce the Obama Presidency Oral History, a comprehensive account of an historic American presidency that will serve as an invaluable resource for scholars, students, and members of the public.
