As you may recall, in May, we established two research stabilization funds to help our scientists and researchers mitigate the challenges posed by disruptions in federal funding.

I am honored to announce that Farah Jasmine Griffin, the William B. Ransford Professor of English and Comparative Literature and of African American Studies, has been appointed University Professor.

This week, seven Columbia faculty members braved the sweltering Washington, D.C., heat and humidity to participate in 15 meetings with lawmakers and Congressional staff. They were there to tell the Columbia story.

Last summer, Columbia and our Task Force on Antisemitism launched a survey to help us understand, with depth and rigor, how the campus climate of the 2023-2024 academic year affected our students’ feelings of belonging and inclusion.

As summer unfolds in earnest, I’d like to offer a brief update about our status with the federal government and share what’s on my mind as we reengage more deeply in those discussions.

I want our community to understand the facts regarding this finding.

Welcome to Columbia on this momentous occasion, this celebration of our 271st academic year.

As we prepare to celebrate Class Days and Commencement, I invite you to watch a short video message reflecting on this important time.

For the past several months, Columbia’s research enterprise has been confronting one of the most sustained and serious disruptions in its history.

As we move into finals tomorrow, I’d like to let our faculty and students know about a few important updates.

Earlier today, a group of protesters occupied one of the main reading rooms in Butler library, refusing to leave, and another group breached the front door causing substantial chaos—all of this as the bulk of our students are working hard to prepare for exams.

Disruptions to our academic activities will not be tolerated and are violations of our rules and policies. This is especially unacceptable while our students study and prepare for final exams.

In March, the University shared its plan to assess and prioritize our research activity in light of substantial cuts to more than 300 multi-year awards for federally funded research.

The end of the semester at Columbia is like a sprint to the finish line.

It’s been heartening, over the last week, to witness so many wonderful scenes on our campus: students everywhere in Commencement regalia, eager to capture photos in the balmy weather.
