Bollinger argues that universities must be allowed to consider race as a factor in admissions to help this country move forward in its quest to overcome the legacies of racial and other injustices than have resulted in the unequal society in which we continue to live. 

This op-ed column reflects on the narrow victory that proponents of affirmative action achieved in Fisher v. Texas and warns against a future in which affirmative action measures could be banned. 

The Supreme Court should not force universities to trade affirmative action for socioeconomic diversity. Schools can have both.
