Dear members of the Columbia community,
On this first day of the academic year, just a quick stop in any of our classrooms, labs, or extracurricular events showcases the strength of our institution—the sensational array of students who arrive from around the country and the world, bringing their varied interests, backgrounds, and stories to our campus. Columbia’s School of General Studies is a critical factor in creating that unique community, and we are thrilled to welcome this year’s incoming class.
Some data about this year’s group: 38% of them are the first in their families to attend college, a greater percentage than any other Ivy League school. 24% are military veterans, which is more than all our peer schools combined. 33% are international students, hailing from 51 countries. 35% of our incoming undergraduate students are Pell Grant recipients. There are nearly 80 students in our Postbac Premed Program. Nearly a third of this class is pursuing dual degrees through our joint programs with Jewish Theological Seminary, Sciences Po in France, Trinity College Dublin, City University of Hong Kong, and Tel Aviv University. The students in this cohort range in age from 18 to 69 years old. Some are married, and many are parents. A significant portion of these new students transferred from a community college, including those in our new partnerships with Borough of Manhattan Community College and Hostos Community College here in New York City. All of them have unique life experiences, and all of them bring enormous wisdom to Columbia.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Columbia General Studies has redefined what it means to be a world-class student in a top research university. We know that lives take many twists and turns, and that excellence takes many different forms. We celebrate the non-traditional paths chosen and are grateful for the richer experience these students create for everyone.
To the newest members of our School of General Studies community—we’re delighted to have you with us. I look forward to seeing you all on campus.
Sincerely,
Claire Shipman
Acting President, Columbia University in the City of New York
